![]() ![]() Just as the word suggests, spaghettification elongates the object in question so that it resembles spaghetti. The intense gravitational force from the singularity pulls at different rates, depending on location relative to the center, which can produce a “spaghettification” effect on any object unfortunate enough to be caught inside. What is commonly accepted, however, is that, because of a black hole’s distortion of the space-time continuum, time at the base of its event horizon passes far slower than time on Earth.īlack holes are hard to find, but if you not only did find one but also went inside it, you would discover that it is fatal. While this is an interesting concept-and no doubt the origin of many sci-fi favorites-because of the inaccessibility of black holes, there is no known way to test it. Some theories even propose that if you could survive the initial entry into a black hole, the inside would produce images of the future and the past all at once-an idea consistent with the multiverse theory of the universe. The farther into a black hole you venture, the more distorted time becomes. The same thing happens with black holes, though the distortion you would experience would be a bit more severe than anything Silly Putty could generate.Īt the edge of a black hole, or the event horizon, time begins to slow astronomically. The marble would bend the plane downward dramatically, which would elongate any interaction with the plane toward the marble. If you imagine space-time as a suspended flat plane of Silly Putty, then creating a singularity would be like putting a marble in the center. So, what happens if you bend it? Well, if you were to experience a black hole up close, time would definitely move much differently from the way it does here on Earth. Space-time, in a very basic sense, is the union of space and time as one four-dimensional continuum. The extreme density of the new singularity pulls everything toward it, including space-time. It is this seemingly impossible contradiction that causes a black hole to form. ![]() The dying star continues to collapse until it becomes a singularity-something consisting of zero volume and infinite density. As it collapses, the star explodes into a supernova-a catastrophic expulsion of its outer material. When a star dies, it collapses inward rapidly. In short, black holes are massive pits of gravity that bend space-time because of their incredibly dense centers, or singularities. But what happens when we take the fiction out of it? What’s really going on inside those terrifying faraway entities? Science fiction has often relied on the concept of black holes as a plot device, painting them as portals to other universes or as vehicles for time travel. ![]() ![]() It’s a touch frustrating that you have to jump into the somewhat hidden away main settings menu to change things like the recording storage location and whether to use Flashback recording. You can tweak capture settings, setup live streaming for the various services offered, adjust game audio levels, setup a live commentary and tag your recording. It’s down the right hand side that all the various settings can be found. Under this are the recording controls, with clear buttons for starting recording or rewinding and pausing the live feed alongside a screenshot button, elapsed time and storage readouts, and a streaming on/off button. Depending on whether you’ve chosen Instant Gameview or the constant-record option this will either be an instant feed or slightly delayed as the software records the scene before showing it. In the top left is the video feed that will show the live feed coming in from your console. The Elgato Game Capture software is self-explanatory for the most part. In fact there isn’t really a driver per se but just the Elgato Game Capture software, which wraps it all up in one. You can safely install the drivers, that you’ll have to download, after you’ve installed the card. Thankfully, unlike many USB devices, the card doesn’t require you to jump through hoops, making sure to install the drivers before plugging the device in. Just slot the card in, plug in your input and output feeds – one HDMI cable is provided in the box – and you’re ready to power your PC on. On the IO side it simply has an HDMI input that will take the feed from your console or other input device and a second HDMI for plugging into your TV or monitor.Īssuming you’re familiar with installing any sort of PC expansion card, installation of the HD 60 Pro is a doddle. The card uses a PCI-E x1 slot so should work with any motherboard from the last several years, though users of mini-ITX PCs that include a graphics card will obviously have to look elsewhere as those motherboards only include one PCI-E slot. Under that cover – it is just a cover, not a heatsink – there’s an MStar MST3367CMK-LF-170 chipset, a Vatics Mozart 395s hardware h.264 encoder, an ITE IT6621FN HDMI interface and 2 x 2Gb Samsung K4B2G1646Q DDR3 memory chips, amongst others. Also included is a low profile IO plate so you can install this card in either full size or low-profile cases. It’s a picture of non-more-black gaming gear, aside from the HD60 Pro logo. The card itself is built on a black PCB with matching matt-black-painted metal IO plate and cover. While you certainly can still move your PC around, it’s a tad more difficult to do so. While something like the Game Capture HD60 can be plugged into any old laptop and thus open the door to it being used anywhere round the house, or round someone else’s house, the HD 60 Pro is shut away inside your PC. CdTe was long recognized for its potential to surpass the conversion efficiencies of conventional silicon solar cells based on bandgap matching to the Shockley Queisser limit. Photovoltaics (PV) using thin film CdTe as a photon absorber have been studied for several decades. Attention is drawn to parallels with back contact materials used on other thin film photovoltaics such as perovskites and kesterites. Excellent reviews of back contacts were published by McCandless and Sites (2011) and Kumar and Rao (2014). The CdTe research community has employed many back contact materials and processes to realize them. Back contact material choice is also influenced by their applicability in more complex architectures such as bifacial and tandem solar cells, where high visible and/or near-infrared transparency is required in conjunction with their electrical properties. Back contact optimization is likely to play a key role in any improvement. The best CdTe devices have short-circuit current close to the limit but open-circuit voltage has much room for improvement. However, there is much potential for progress toward the Shockley-Queisser limit (32%). ![]() The king distributed large tracts of lands to various noblemen who governed the lands with the king's authority. ![]() Over the years, the government became more centralized by concentrating the power in a single ruler, the king. Originally, the tuns ruled themselves through the election of tithingmen and reeves. This principle of direct citizen participation survives today in the procedure known as posse comitatus or posse. Any citizen hearing the alarm was then legally responsible for helping to bring the criminal to justice. If a criminal or escaped suspect was at large, it was the sheriff's responsibility to give the alarm, the hue and cry as it was called. However, every citizen's duty was to assist the sheriff in keeping the peace. Under England's King Alfred the Great, the sheriff was responsible for maintaining law and order within his county. To distinguish the leader of the hundreds from the leader of the shire, the more powerful leader became known as the shire-reeve (later becoming sheriff - meaning the keeper or chief of the county). Just as the hundreds elected a reeve, each shire had a reeve. A new unit of government, the shire, was formed when groups of hundreds joined together (the shire is the forerunner of the county). Each group of ten tithings, one hundred families, elected its own chief called a gerefa (later shortened to reeve).ĭuring the next two centuries, a number of changes took place in the tithing and hundreds. Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up and they stood before the image.” Medieval England “.Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. in the Book of Daniel, which recounts the presence of the sheriff at the setting up of the golden image by the Chaldean King of Babylon, Nebuchadneszzar. ![]() These issues allow us important insights into peasant mentalities and attitudes to order, disorder, gender and seigniorial authority. The first mention of sheriff is found dated back to 600 B.C. Similarly peasant communities appear to have applied some degree of discretion in their dealing with particular offences, by, for instance, not drawing attention to some of them by raising the hue and cry. Discrepancies in offending behaviour between men and women can be evaluated and compared between two manorial communities. At the same time such cases can be explored for peasant attitudes to gender, gender roles as well as peasant attitudes to seigniorial authority. The cases which caused the hue and cry to be raised, and which were then recorded in the manorial court rolls, can reveal a great deal about peasant attitudes to different types of offending behaviour, as well as local mechanisms of social control. The raising of the hue and cry was not only an important tool for policing local communities, it was also a communal ritual. This paper seeks to explore aspects of peasant community policing and keeping order in two fourteenth-century villages. ![]() |
